Vancouver is a coastal seaport city on the mainland of British Columbia, located on the western half of the Burrard Peninsula. It is the most populous city in the province, with the 2021 census recording Vancouver’s population at 662,248 people. Vancouver’s population is estimated to grow to 765,000 by 2041. Vancouver is among Canada’s densest and most ethnically diverse cities, with over 40% of its population being immigrants. 

The city’s urban plan is focused on livability to create a city of neighborhoods where people can work, play, and shop. On July 22, 2022, the Vancouver city council approved a historic long-range land use strategy to create a more livable, affordable, and sustainable city for everyone. The plan will guide Vancouver’s long-term growth over the next 30 years. 

The plan focuses on adding more housing options and density throughout the city, including multi-family homes, low-rise apartments, and rental housing options.
